EU AI Act
Also known as: European Union Artificial Intelligence Act, Artificial Intelligence Act (EU)
A European Union regulation, adopted in 2024, that establishes a risk-based framework for AI systems deployed in the EU. High-risk systems — including AI used in employment, hiring, worker management, education, and access to essential services — are subject to obligations around data quality, transparency, human oversight, documentation, and non-discrimination. The Act is relevant to accessibility practice because it provides explicit legal footing to challenge algorithmic hiring tools and automated decision systems that disadvantage disabled applicants, and it complements the European Accessibility Act and EN 301 549.
