eIDAS

Also known as: electronic IDentification, Authentication and trust Services, eIDAS 2.0

A European Union regulation governing electronic identification and trust services across the single market. The revised eIDAS 2.0 regulation, adopted in 2024, requires each member state to provide a European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet to all citizens and residents by the end of 2026 and mandates that both public and large private services accept these wallets for authentication. For accessibility, eIDAS 2.0 is significant because it requires the reference wallet implementation to comply with the European Accessibility Act, the Web Accessibility Directive, and EN 301 549, making identity wallets the first pan-European digital infrastructure with explicit accessibility obligations from the outset.
