Localization

Localization is the process of determining a user's position within an environment, typically using a combination of sensors such as GPS, inertial measurement units, BLE beacons, Wi-Fi signals, or computer vision. Accurate localization is the foundational challenge for all accessible wayfinding systems: without knowing where a user is, no meaningful navigation guidance can be provided. For blind and low-vision users, localization must work across indoor-outdoor transitions, in GPS-denied areas like tunnels and buildings, and at a precision level sufficient for pedestrian navigation—requirements that far exceed what mainstream mapping applications typically provide.
