Behavioral Intervention

Also known as: Behavior Intervention, Applied Behavior Analysis, ABA

A systematic approach to understanding and modifying behavior, most commonly applied to support children with autism, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. Behavioral intervention uses evidence-based techniques including prompting, reinforcement, cueing, and feedback hierarchies to help individuals learn new skills, reduce challenging behaviors, and increase functional communication and daily living abilities. In the context of assistive technology, behavioral interventions are increasingly mediated by technology — such as VR environments for social skills training, apps for visual schedules, and AAC devices for communication. However, research reveals that much of what makes behavioral intervention effective is the tacit knowledge of trained clinicians (adjusting tone, reading behavioral cues, building rapport) that is difficult to replicate in technology systems, highlighting the importance of clinician involvement in assistive technology design rather than treating technology as a replacement for therapeutic mediation.
