Pre-journey Learning

Also known as: Pre-visit Spatial Learning, Virtual Pre-exploration

The practice of learning about an environment's spatial layout before physically visiting it, typically through tactile maps, verbal descriptions, or virtual exploration tools. For people who are blind or have low vision, pre-journey learning supports the development of a cognitive map that aids subsequent wayfinding and orientation in unfamiliar spaces. Research shows that exploring tactile maps before visiting a building leads to better spatial knowledge of surrounding areas, landmarks, and route options compared to learning only through in-person verbal instructions. Pre-journey learning is particularly valuable for complex indoor environments like hospitals, universities, or transit hubs where real-time navigation assistance alone may be insufficient for developing true spatial understanding.
